VOL – Shoreline Clean up at Texas City Dike

October 22, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am

We will be picking up fishing line on the Texas City Dike on October 22nd at 8am.  Our focus will be  where the Oystercatchers hang out and feed.  Please email Stennie if you can participate at [email protected]

Background: Sue Heath of GCBO and several GBAC members have discovered 6 American Oystercatchers with their feet entangled in fishing line at the Texas City Dike. Sue and team have been able to rescue and free only one. Sue Heath asked if we could set up a fishing line cleanup asap to prevent more from being entangled in fishing line.

The ideal set of conditions for Oystercatchers to become entangled exist at Texas City Dike now. High tides keep the birds normal feeding grounds under water. People are catching a lot of fish at the dike now which translates to more than normal dead fish along the shoreline. Easy pickings for hungry oystercatchers and their chicks.
Please email Stennie if you can participate at [email protected]
Please email Stennie at [email protected] if you can help and bring your own cutting tool. Wire cutters, nail clippers or what ever you know works for you.
We’ll meet at 8:00 am at the First Lady Pavilion then travel to the pre-selected areas.
Opportunity:  Shoreline monitoring/Clean up
