VOL – Stormwater Wetland Thursday

April 16, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

All, Here is the stormwater wetland volunteer update for this week.

This Thursday: April 23, 9am-12

Cullen will lead the crews in preparing the nursery to look its best for the Earth Day event this Saturday (see below for more info about that). This will be a great primer on wetland weed identification!

At the same time, Mary Carol will be hosting a workshop in Houston which some of you may be interested in: Wetland Economic Benefits for the Upper Texas Gulf Coast. Please go to http://wetlandbenefits.eventbrite.com for more info and to register. It is free, and the lineup of speakers is excellent. If you are just now hearing about it, it’s because we’ve been targeting professionals who work with landowners, but we are opening it now to anyone who has an interest in incentives to conserve, restore, and create wetlands. Space is limited so registration is required.

The nursery is near 1801 Neptune Lane, Clear Lake City (Houston) 77062. Park along the street near the bridge (from which you can see the nursery) and take the northeast trail.

 Last week:

A minor weather miracle made it possible to pot up 264 of the Powdery alligator flag/Thalia dealbata we collected in Brazoria, 128 Dixie iris/Iris hexagona and 28 Spider lilies/Hymenocallis liriosme courtesy of Chris, before the rain began in earnest. Thanks to Pete, Peggy, Paula, Lydia, Ray, Joe, Nancy, Diane, Martha, and Sandra!

 Upcoming dates:

Thursday Apr 23: Nursery work with Cullen. Wetland Economic Benefits workshop with Mary Carol.

Saturday Apr 25: Earth Day at Exploration Green. Visitors to the tree and wetland nurseries will get a chance to see what we do here and get their hands dirty. Docents will be needed. See us in an article about the event: http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/bay_area/news/celebrate-earth-day-at-exploration-green-april/article_132f4153-a2cb-5320-aca5-bb8e1c7d2a4b.html

Thursday April 30: Local plant collecting and nursery work

Note: GBAMN spring training began Feb 12. Some of you may be involved in that effort and please know that training comes first. We will be here when you get back!

Thanks for your participation!

This Thursday: April 16, 9am-12

The forecast predicts rain in the morning, but if the rain is light and there’s no lightning, we’ll be back in the nursery to pot up the Powdery alligator flag/Thalia dealbata we collected last week, plus some native irises courtesy of Chris. If there is a threat of lightning, volunteers can join us in the TCWP office at 1250 Bay Area Blvd for prairie seed processing.

The nursery is near 1801 Neptune Lane, Clear Lake City (Houston) 77062. Park along the street near the bridge (from which you can see the nursery) and take the northeast trail.

Last week:

We took the show on the road to Brazoria County to collect Powdery alligator flag/Thalia dealbata.  Wet soil and weather were ideal and short work was made of digging a trailer load of beautiful plants before the TCWP van arrived from Clear Lake. Many thanks to Sheila, Peggy, Pete, Susan, Jerry, Joe, Ray, and Paula!

Upcoming dates:

Thursday Apr 23: Nursery work with Cullen. Mary will be at a workshop.

Saturday Apr 25: Earth Day at Exploration Green. Visitors to the tree and wetland nurseries will get a chance to see what we do here and get their hands dirty. Docents will be needed.
