Event Description:
Dr. Steve May will present his research from the Malone Mountains in West Texas on some newly recovered Jurassic vertebrae fossils, which are the first Jurassic age vertebrates to be described from Texas and represent marine reptiles known as plesiosaurs.

The event will include an introduction to the vertebrate paleontology lab within the Jackson School Museum of Earth History. In addition to his research on new Jurassic vertebrate fossils, Dr. May will speak about additional research which includes a description of a 15-million-year-old fossil beaver from Texas as well as an analysis of the Lapara Creek fauna from the 11-million-year-old Goliad Formation.

Dr. Steve May is a research associate at the University of Texas at Austin’s Jackson School Museum of Earth History. He started out volunteering during his high school years at the vertebrate paleontology department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and 1985 after which he worked at ExxonMobil as a research geologist until he retired in 2014 as Chief Research Geoscientist.
