Eventually, all our favorite (and not so favorite!) county mammals will be featured here. Skunks, Raccoons, Coyotes, Foxes, Bobcats, Squirrels, Deer, Feral Hogs, and maybe even the never yet accurately identified but often mentioned “Black Panther” – but don’t count on it!
We thought of including a category for a “Master Naturalist Mammal in the Wild”, but no one wanted their picture taken “au naturel”. Maybe someday.

Gray Fox
Canidae Urocyon cinereoargenteus
“Sly as a fox” goes the saying. These elusive little guys can often be seen scurrying across a road or pasture, ever wary of what may be watching or what may make a quick meal.

Coyote
Canadae Canis latrans
This opportunistic guy is about the size of a small German Shepard, with very keen senses of hearing, sight and smell.
Eastern Fox Squirrel
Scieridae Scierus niger
This cute little tree squirrel is an important game animal, and likes to plant his gathered seeds and nuts to make new trees grow for his future generations – at least those he doesn’t eat! (Photo by Len Brumin)

Red Wolf
Canadae Canus rufus
Smaller than a Grey Wolf, and more social than a Coyote (but still avoids humans), this guy is believed to be extinct in Texas, and is a US threatened species.
