Mont Belvieu • Bird City Texas
Pursuing Bird City Texas Certification
Mont Belvieu is working toward earning Bird City Texas Certification, recognizing communities dedicated to protecting bird habitats, engaging residents in conservation, and celebrating local birdlife.
Commitment to Conservation
Why Bird City Texas Matters
By joining the Bird City Texas program—a partnership between Audubon Texas and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department—Mont Belvieu demonstrates its commitment to creating a bird-friendly environment.
Every year, millions of birds migrate through Texas at night—including right over Mont Belvieu! Artificial lights at night can confuse and endanger migrating birds, causing window collisions and disrupting flight routes. Outdoor cats also pose a significant risk during these migration periods.
Hackberry Gully Park
Hackberry Gully Park has recorded over 145 identified bird species.

Bird City Texas Goals
- Restore and protect native bird habitats.

How You Can Help
Take Action for Birds
Simple actions by residents make a massive difference for local and migratory bird populations:
Participate in Lights-Out Texas: Turn off or dim unnecessary outdoor lighting during peak spring (March–June) and fall (August–November) migration between 11 PM and 6 AM. Use motion sensors or close blinds.
Keep Cats Indoors: Indoor cats live longer, healthier lives while protecting native bird species and supporting a healthy ecosystem.
Plant Native Flora: Landscape with native plants that offer seeds, berries, and essential insects for birds.
