Monarch Joint Venture: Ask an Expert: Monarch Tagging and Movement

October 21 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Online. Free.
Join us on October 21st from 6:00-7:30pm CT for an Ask an Expert session with Dr. Kristen Baum and Dr. David La Puma, two voices in monarch conservation and tagging. This live event offers an opportunity to hear from both experts as they answer your questions, share insights from their careers, and explore monarch tagging, movement ecology, and its effects on conservation.
Dr. Kristen Baum is the director of Monarch Watch and a senior scientist and professor at the University of Kansas. Monarch Watch’s tagging program began in 1992. Since then, thousands of people tag monarchs every year and more than 21,500 tags have been recovered from the overwintering sanctuaries in Mexico. Baum’s research also focuses on the effects of land use, management practices, and environmental factors on monarchs and other pollinators.
David A. La Puma, Ph.D., is an ornithologist, conservation scientist, and Vice President of Global Market Development at Cellular Tracking Technologies, where he helps researchers apply wildlife-tracking technology to conservation. He earned his doctorate at Rutgers University, studying fire ecology and the endangered Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow, and later used weather radar to map nocturnal bird migration. David previously directed New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory. Today, he collaborates internationally on telemetry projects involving songbirds, owls, raptors, hummingbirds, bats, and monarch butterflies. Based in Cape May, New Jersey, he is passionate about translating scientific data into conservation action for wildlife. This is a science-focused expert panel that will tap into both speakers’ expertise and passion for monarchs, conservation, and technology.
